Bang Tao Recovery Project

BACKGROUND INFORMATION

Bang Tao was hit by the tidal wave on Dec 26, 2004 mid-morning. Fortunately for many people, someone from Naiharn called his friend Jay at Bang Tao Beachside Resort and warned him of the impending disaster. People were warned at his resort and near-by. However, many injuries were still sustained and a small number of lives were lost. Also, a “devastation zone” 150 meters in from the beach was created.

The area was inspected by Mike Cegielski within 4 hours of the tidal wave. Shock, mayhem, and looting were all present. Due to the pressing need to help with victims, restoration efforts were postponed until the injured were helped.

The Bang Tao team was started on January 1, 2005 when Mike and Susan began work with locals, Andaman Seaview Resort staff, Western volunteers, and a 4-person team from YWAM, Hawaii . Since then, other teams and volunteers have come, some have left, and other teams and various locals and tourists have come and worked on the project.

We met with local orbatol officials and info rmed them of our intentions. Mike is now working as the American representative to the Bang Tao Orbatol. All of our work efforts are coordinated with the administrative offices here, and often the work is done by combined teams.

Meanwhile, we have been informing various civic and private groups about the needs here. We have received small donations from various individuals to assist in initial purchases of tools and supplies to get started. We hope to partner with various organizations, businesses, construction professionals, and volunteers to complete the initial recovery of Bang Tao.
