Avedisian to participate in Rhode Island Day at National Cathedral

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian will travel to Washington, DC on Sunday to participate in Rhode Island State Day at the National Cathedral. The event recognizes the many contributions that Rhode Islanders have made to the nation and to the Cathedral. The Right Reverend Geralyn Wolf, bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, and The Very Reverend Samuel T. Lloyd III, dean, Washington National Cathedral, are key participants in the service.

Avedisian will read the first Scripture lesson (2 Corinthians 1:18-22). The service begins at 11 a.m.

Following the service, there will be a reception for all visitors from Rhode Island, followed by private tours of the Cathedral.

Rhode Island is represented in several ways throughout the cathedral: the Rhode Island flag hangs in the Nave; the state seal is a part of the narthex floor in the west end of the Cathedral and is represented on a needlepoint wall hanging; the state flower – the violet – is represented in a vestibule; kneelers in St. John’s Chapel honor William Ellery Channing, Nathaniel Greene, Oliver Perry, Samuel Slater and Gilbert Stuart; and the needlepoint kneelers at the High Altar communion rail were stitched by a group of women from Providence.
