AVEDISIAN ANNOUNCES CDBG AWARDS

Non-profits, neighborhood associations to reap benefits of federal grants

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today the annual awarding of Community Development Block Grant funds to a neighborhood association and non-profit agencies throughout the city during a press conference at the Fran Conway House of Hope on Jefferson Boulevard . U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee attended the event and toured the 11-studio apartment facility.

A total of $165,000 has been allocated for public service projects and will be distributed as follows: Westbay Community Action, Inc, a total of $42,000 for emergency housing assistance, children’s center case manager and social services case manager; Warwick House of Hope, $19,600 for HOPE and comprehensive social services program; JONAH, $6,500 for a human service program; Elizabeth Buffum Chace Center, $12,100 for youth programming; Boys & Girls Clubs of Warwick, $14,100 for Oakland Beach Branch operations; The Kent Center, $18,600 for the victims of trauma program; Sexual Assault and Trauma Resource Center of RI, $2,800 for the children’s advocacy center; Indigenous People Organization, $5,600 for a youth program; Kent County VNA, $11,2000 for its CARE program; Cornerstone Adult Services, $14,000 for activities for individuals with Alzheimer’s Disease; and Rhode Island Family Shelter, $18,500 for its shelter, safety and health protection program.

An additional $138,498 will be allocated to agencies undergoing public facilities/site improvement projects. They are: The Rhode Island Family Shelter, $28,000 for shelter building improvements; Westbay Community Action, a total of $60,000 for a housing project and its home repair program; Kent House, $20,000 for transitional housing renovations; Boys and Girls Clubs of Warwick, $5,498 for building improvements; and Friends Way, $25,000 for a new air conditioning system.

Several neighborhood groups receive funds on a rotating basis. This year, the East Natick association will receive $100,000 to help implement portions of its master plan.

The remaining funds for Year 32 of the Community Development Block grant are $285,000 for administrative costs and $200,000 for the Home Improvement Loan Program.
