Wildlife and Conservation Commission to celebrate Arbor Day in 2nd annual event
WARWICK – The Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission will host an Arbor Day Tree Planting ceremony on Sunday, April 30, at 3 p.m. A tree, provided through a grant the commission received from the Rhode Island Tree Council, will be planted at the Oakland Beach Elementary School, 383 Oakland Beach Avenue.
One of the purposes of the Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission, as listed in its bylaws, is to “enhance natural aesthetics and wildlife habitat” of the City. This marks the second year in a row the Commission has hosted a tree planting, last years event at Cedar Hill School was a big success.
Lee Whitaker, chairman of the Commission, expressed gratitude for all the work that went into this event. “I want to give thanks to several people, especially Oakland Beach School Principal Dr. Richard D’Agostino; Mr. Fred DeNoncour, the City Arborist, for his support; Ms. Anne Holst for refreshments, Mr. Steven Lamarre for coordinating with Mr. DeNoncour and Dr. D’Agostino and for caring for the tree after it was picked up from the Tree Council; and Ms. Susan Cabeceiras of the City Planning Department for all of her work in support of the Warwick Wildlife and Conservation Commission.”
“Over the past few years, we have made promoting, expanding and improving our environmental programs a priority,” said Mayor Avedisian. “The tree planting at Oakland Beach School will greatly enhance ongoing revitalization efforts in the neighborhood, and is a wonderful way to continue our efforts to improve the air quality and aesthetic beauty of the entire City.”
The public is welcome to attend this event. Refreshments will be provided by Clouds Hill Victorian House Museum.
