Avedisian proposes city take over trash collection at city buildings

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian is proposing that, beginning in FY07, crews from the city’s Recycling and Sanitation Division take over collection of trash and recyclables in municipal buildings.

In his FY07 spending plan, Avedisian suggests that using municipal crews – instead of continuing to pay a private trash hauler – to collect refuse and recycling from city buildings will save at least $20,000 a year after an initial expenditure for additional equipment.

“Realistically, as we move forward with this program, we’ll see greater savings, since we’ll have greater control over how trash and recyclables are being disposed of and will reduce our annual tipping fees at the landfill,” Avedisian said.

Avedisian said that his office and Department of Public Works administrators are currently speaking with the School Department about expanding the program to include school-owned buildings by FY08. “I’m hopeful that the School Department will seriously consider our proposal and the great savings it can realize by having our own crews take over trash collection at their facilities,” he said.
