WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian said today that a memorial to Warwick residents who were victims of the Station Nightclub Fire will be erected on the property that is currently home to Fire Department headquarters, once the department moves into the new headquarters currently under construction across the street.
Avedisian proposes that the memorial be sited where the Fire Department currently has a memorial to its fallen brethren.
“Since the Fire Department plans to relocate that monument across the street on its new property, it seemed an appropriate, and publicly visible spot, to place a memorial to commemorate the lives of the fire victims,” Avedisian said. “This is something that relatives have been asking for, and we are happy to have an ability to accommodate that request. Because so many of our fire and rescue personnel were on the scene that evening, it seems particularly fitting that the memorial would be located there.”
Avedisian said the city has not determined the cost of the monument, or how it will be paid for. “That is something we will take a look at as we get closer to the Fire Department transferring its operations across the street,” he said.
