WARWICK – A cooperative effort between the city’s Department of Public Works and the Rhode Island Airport Corporation to combat a chronic problem will lead to less water pollution and a cleaner overall neighborhood, Mayor Scott Avedisian and RIAC President and CEO Mark Brewer announced.
The recently acquired RIAC property at the end of Lydick Avenue, which was easily accessible to the general public, had become a source of frequent complaints because people were dumping garbage on the site. This was of particular concern because the refuse was, in turn, ending up in nearby Buckeye Brook, which feeds into Spring Green Pond.
RIAC representatives met with the city’s Highway Division chief to determine what could be done to mitigate the problem, and a 200-foot fence was recently installed to limit access to the site. RIAC crews did the work, and the city helped to pay for materials, Avedisian said.
“We are very pleased that Mr. Brewer and his staff were so willing to work with the city to address this issue, which had become a nuisance for area residents and an environmental concern,” Avedisian said.
“We appreciate the opportunity to work with the city and look to future cooperative efforts, especially those to improve the environment,” said Brewer.
