Avedisian moving forward to promote Cool Cities initiatives
Has asked Council President to introduce a variety of legislation on his behalf

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that he has asked City Council President Joseph Solomon to docket a variety of legislation aimed at helping the city conserve energy and reduce pollutants – fulfilling a pledge he made during his Inaugural remarks last month.

One of the ordinances would affect the city’s bidding process to purchase vehicles, in that it would require that all bids also seek prices for alternative fuel, hybrid and diesel vehicles.

Three other ordinances would amend the Zoning Code, the municipal planning process and the Building Code, respectively, to include so-called “green roofing” provisions. Green roofing, or the practice of planting roof gardens, would help to conserve natural resources, promote sustainable development, minimize development’s adverse environmental impacts and improve the overall quality of life through the reduction of pollutants and aesthetic appeal of green roofing, Avedisian said.

“I believe that the majority of our council members are very open to measures that would help us to protect and preserve our environment and save money, and am hopeful that they will vote favorably on these proposals when the legislation comes before them,” Avedisian said.

Conservation measures that Avedisian implemented during the past several years include a no-idling policy, installation of LED light and expansion of the annual tree planting program.
