Avedisian announces completion of Ives Bluff sale
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the city has completed the purchase of nearly 5 acres at Ives Bluff in Potowomut. The land, which will be preserved as open space, is situated on Greenwich Bay waters that are protected by the Coastal Resources Management Council’s highest level of protection – Type I classification.
Avedisian said Assistant City Solicitor Peter Ruggiero and attorneys for Ives Bluff, LLC, closed on the property yesterday, and the deed is being filed today. The city paid $640,000 for the land – half of which was paid from the municipal open space bond fund and the remainder from a matching grant from the state Department of Environmental Management.
The Warwick Land Trust will be custodians of the parcel, Avedisian said. Last year, the City Council passed a resolution, which the mayor signed, authorizing an easement on the land that would allow an existing pedestrian walkway and stairs leading to Greenwich Cove to be repaired.
“It has been a long process to purchase this land,” Avedisian said. “I am very pleased that we have ultimately been successful in saving these five environmentally valuable and sensitive acres from future development.”
