free lead hazard awareness class
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the Warwick Lead Hazard Reduction Program (WLHRP), in cooperation with the Childhood Lead Action Project, will offer a free, three-hour lead mitigation class to owners of rental property.
According to the statewide Lead Hazard Mitigation Act of 2002, all owners of rental property constructed prior to 1978 are required to attend the lead hazard awareness class by July 1 of this year.
The class will be offered on a first-come, first served basis to 50 Warwick property owners on Wednesday, June 1 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Buttonwoods Community Center at 3027 West Shore Road.
Registration is required. For more information, or to register for the class, individuals should contact the WLHRP at 738-2000, ext. 6375, email info@leadsafekids.org or go online to www.leadsafekids.org.
The Warwick Lead Hazard Reduction Program is funded by a three-year, $1.8 million grant– the largest single award in the city’s history – from HUD’s Office of Healthy Homes and Lead Hazard Control. The WLHRP is meant to financially assist eligible homeowners and/or investors to reduce lead hazards at their property, with a goal of 125 lead-safe housing units and an estimated 75 children with decreased risk of poisoning by 2007.
The Childhood Lead Action Project is a non-profit organization working to eliminate childhood lead poisoning – a serious environmental health threat for children in Rhode Island – through education, parent support and advocacy.
