Police kick off
recruitment drive
Women and Minorities are strongly encouraged to apply
WARWICK – Police Colonel Stephen McCartney and Mayor Scott Avedisian announced
today that the Police Department will kick off its recruitment drive on March
6. Applications will be available on that day, through March 26, at police headquarters
in Apponaug or online at www.warwickpd.org.
Qualified applicants must be at least 21 years old and United States citizens with a minimum of 60 college credits from an accredited university, or proof of three years of continuous active military duty. Applicants must also hold a valid driver’s license, be of good moral character and successful completion of a background investigation.
In April, qualified applicants will be subjected to a physical fitness test and both written and oral examinations. Individuals who score 70 or higher will be placed on the department’s active recruitment list for two years; the number of new hires will depend on retirements within the force and budgetary considerations, according to Lt. Kerry Holsten, who is overseeing the recruitment process.
This year, the department will implement an innovative ad campaign that has not been used by any law enforcement agency in Rhode Island. In addition to billboards in Warwick, Providence, Pawtucket and Cranston, the department will also place billboard-style advertisements on the side of Rhode Island Public Transit Authority buses, and particularly on those vehicles in service in areas with a high minority population, Holsten said.
In December, the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc. (CALEA) accredited the department for the third consecutive time. The department is one of only 2,000 law enforcement agencies internationally and one of only five in the state to earn this prestigious recognition. Considered a model for other law enforcement agencies throughout the state, Warwick is the head of the Rhode Island Police Accreditation Coalition, which provides advice and practical assistance to agencies seeking to earn national accreditation.
