Avedisian announces community forum kickoff
for National Victims’ Rights Initiative – Force 100
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian will host a community forum for Kent County on Monday, February 23 at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers. This forum will kickoff a statewide effort to secure successful passage of a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution to protect victims’ rights.
Rhode Island co-chairwomen are Anne Marie D’Alessio, director of the Rhode Island Victim’s Advocacy and Support Center, and Marie Bouchard. In 1989, Marie lost her daughter and grandchildren, Joan, Jennifer and Melissa Heaton. They were murdered in their home in the Buttonwoods area of Warwick. Since that time, Warwick has established a gazebo in City Park in memory of the Heatons and Rebecca Spencer, who had also been murdered by the same juvenile offender.
This forum will provide community education on the need for a federal amendment and how Rhode Islanders can participate in protecting victims’ rights. Criminal defendants have 15 amendments to the U.S. Constitution, while victims have none.
