announces
Phase II of automated recycling and trash program
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that Phase
II of the city’s automated trash collection program will begin the week
of April 12. Between 3,800 and 4,000 homes will be included in this phase.
Last August, the city began the program, which uses an automated side load vehicle with a crane-like arm to pick up and empty trash or recyclables into the truck, with approximately 4,000 residences throughout the city. The new system has already proven successful; the amount of recyclables collected has increased by 230 tons from this time last year, Avedisian said.
Several weeks ago, residents whose homes will be included in Phase II received letters to explain the program. The special carts – grey for trash, blue for bottles and cans and green for paper products – will be delivered the week of March 29.
Neighborhoods that are included in Phase II are: homes off of Church Avenue, neighborhoods around Warwick Veterans High School, Norwood, Hoxsie and homes in Cowesett.
The automated system is expected to reduce costs related to on-the-job injuries and to provide for neater and more efficient trash collection, Avedisian said.
