Warwick selected to participate
in Walkable Community Workshop Program
Workshop’s goal is to make Apponaug Village more pedestrian friendly

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian, elected officials, Planning Department staff, community leaders and representatives from the state Department of Transportation, the state Department of Health and the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority will participate in a four-hour Walkable Community Workshop in an effort to identity ways to make Apponaug Village and the surrounding area more pedestrian friendly. The workshop will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, May 25 at City Hall.

Warwick is one of eight communities in Rhode Island selected to participate in the workshop program, which is presented by the National Center for Bicycling and Walking, with funding provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Rhode Island Statewide Planning Program.

Rhode Island was one of just a few regions chosen to participate in the national effort to make communities and regions more pedestrian friendly. Successes from other states have included identifying and implementing new traffic calming programs; revitalized main streets; more pedestrian-friendly intersections; new, accessible sidewalks; and safe routes to school programs.
