Avedisian, Torres announce Warwick response to Hurricane Katrina
WARWICK –Mayor Scott Avedisian and City Council President Donald Torres today announced that the city will collect money to assist five agencies that are working to provide relief to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
“After communications with Mayor Beverly O’Neill, the mayor of Long Beach, California, and the president of the United States Conference of Mayors, Council President Torres and I have decided that the most effective way of coordinating Warwick’s assistance to victims of this tragic situation on the Gulf Coast is to collect money for five agencies actively involved in on-the-ground relief efforts,” Avedisian said.
“We want to make sure that the generosity of Warwick residents will go directly to relief efforts in the most effective and efficient way,” Torres said. “In order to do so, we will partner with five agencies that have proven their ability to help solve problems and assist in past relief efforts.”
Checks can be made payable to one of the five following agencies:
Avedisian and Torres said that checks and other contributions should be sent to Maureen Volpe, Family Support and Human Services director, care of the Buttonwoods Community Center, 3027 West Shore Road, Warwick, RI 02886.
