DOT to begin work on Centerville Road project

WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the state Department of Transportation has informed the city that work will soon begin on the Centerville Road (Route 117) project.

The $5 million project is expected to be completed in its entirety by December 2005 and will include installation of curbing, sidewalks, catch basins, roadway lighting, signage and repair of the road itself, as well as installation of traffic signals at Toll Gate and Hardig roads and at the intersection of Route 117 and 95 North.

The first phase of the project is slated to begin within the next week or so, with work ending for the construction season sometime around mid-December, according to DOT, Avedisian said. Signage and measures to combat erosion will be installed first.

Construction will take place from 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. for daytime operations, and between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for night work. Cardi Construction Corp. has been awarded the project.

DOT has informed the city that there will be a resident engineer on site, that a field office will soon be set up in the area, and that residents will be notified about the project by mail, Avedisian said. Additionally, a community meeting will be held in the spring, before the construction season gets underway. The state agency has also said it will hold frequent meetings with city and Kent Hospital officials to keep them apprised of the project’s progress, Avedisian said.
