Avedisian announces opening of therapeutic pool
WARWICK – Mayor Scott Avedisian hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony this afternoon to open the city’s new therapeutic pool at McDermott Pool on Sandy Lane. The pool is the first municipally-owned facility of its kind in Rhode Island.
Construction was paid for through a recreation bond approved by Warwick voters in 2002.
The pool holds 15,000 gallons of water, measures 30 x 18 feet, has a maximum depth of four feet and a 20-person capacity. Wide, handicapped-accessible steps and a mobile, electric chair lift will make it easy for residents to access the pool. Those who use the facility will share locker rooms with McDermott pool patrons.
With water temperatures between 86 to 90 degrees, the pool is designed to offer residents with chronic conditions, such as arthritis, or those undergoing physical therapy, the opportunity to participate in low-impact, warm water exercises.
Lifeguards have been trained in warm water aquatic exercise and safety training programs.
