GENERAL DUTIES

Perform skilled firefighting work in combating, extinguishing, and preventing fires; in rendering medical assistance at medical and other emergency scenes; and in operating and maintaining Fire Department equipment, apparatus, and work environment

SALARY

  • Salary earned while attending academy: $600 weekly (as of November 2022)
  • Salary earned after successful academy completion: $57,000 includes weekly salary + holidays

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be at least 18 years of age but not more than 34 years of age at time of application.
    • 34 year old applicants must not have reached their 35th birthday prior to appointment to the Warwick Fire Department.
  • Must be a United States Citizen and furnish a birth certificate or US-INS Qualified for Employment.
  • Must possess and furnish a copy of valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess a High School Diploma or General Education Diploma (GED) prior to offer of employment.
  • Physical Performance Assessment (PPA) certification, (Dated after January 1, 2022); administered by the Rhode Island Association of Fire Chiefs.

  • Must have no felony criminal convictions
  • Must be able to obtain Rhode Island Emergency Medical Technician license prior to offer of employment.
    • Acceptable alternatives:
    • Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac or Paramedic License
    • Current National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) Certification in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT); Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT); or Paramedic

TESTING REQUIREMENTS

  • 60% Written Examination
  • 40% Oral Interview

The minimum passing score required on both examinations shall be 70%

  • Five (5) additional points will be awarded to City of Warwick Residents with proper documentation.
  • Five (5) additional points will be awarded for Current / Past Military service with proper documentation.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Background Investigation
  • Medical Exam with drug screening
  • No Smoking & Drug-free agreements
  • Successful completion of 18-week recruit academy
  • Rhode Island AEMT-Cardiac License must be obtained within two (2) years of appointment to the Warwick Fire Department at applicant’s expense

  • High School Diploma / GED (prior to offer of employment)
    • High School Diploma / GED (General Education Diploma) or higher.
  • Motor Vehicle Operator’s License
    • A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Not state specific.
  • Driving Record
    • A Certified copy of your driving record, obtained within 90 days of this application, from Operator Control Office – Registry of Motor Vehicles of the State in which you reside.

  • Criminal Background Check
    • A Certified copy of your criminal background check, obtained within 90 days of this application, from the Department of Attorney General of the State in which you reside.
