Flood hazard maps, also known as Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), are important tools in the effort to protect lives and properties in Warwick. They indicate the risk for flooding throughout the City. However, the current maps are out of date and an extensive Flood Map Modernization Program is currently underway nationwide.

Spring 2011 Master Energy Training Program

The University of Rhode Island Outreach Center presents the Spring 2011 Master Energy Training Program (April 4th - 21st).

The URI Master Energy Training Program is a series of introductory-level evening classes that provide property owners and any interested individuals with practical information on how to save money, protect the environment and support RI’s green economy with energy efficiency, conservation, renewable energy and alternative fuels.

The program also covers the latest information on state and federal incentives, legislation and policy, and cutting edge research. No prior experience or knowledge required.

Grants Administration Training in Warwick, RI  -  May 16-17, 2011

The Warwick Police Department and Grant Writing USA will present a two-day grant management workshop in Warwick, May 16-17, 2011.  This training is for grant recipient organizations across all disciplines.  Attend this class and you'll learn how to administer government grants and stay in compliance with applicable rules and regulations.

 
Police promotional, recognition ceremony is Tuesday night

Mayor Scott Avedisian will join police officials and the Board of Public Safety at the department’s promotional and awards ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday, (February 22) in City Hall’s Council Chambers, 3275 Post Road.

Avedisian will administer the oath of office to Captain Raymond E. Gallucci, Jr., who is being promoted to the rank of Major.

Avedisian will also swear in Thomas C. Hannon, who was promoted to the rank of captain in December, but has been on active duty with the National Guard and will soon be deployed to Afghanistan. (His family members were on hand in December to receive his promotional award on his behalf.) The department will also recognize the appointment of David S. Morrow to the detective division.
 
Avedisian recognizes “American Heart Month,” encourages residents to learn CPR, improve overall health

In recognition of February as “American Hearth Month,” Mayor Scott Avedisian is encourage residents to consider taking CPR training and to learn more about factors that can put them at risk for heart attack or stroke.   The campaign has a goal of increasing nationwide awareness of the importance of hearth health – efforts, Avedisian noted, that are particularly critical when one considers statistics from the American Heart Association.
 
School Committee approves repayment of debt to City

Mayor Scott Avedisian and School Committee member Christopher Friel announced today that the School Committee has formally approved repayment of $1,843,201 it owed the city.

Several months ago, Friel, who served as School Committee chairman for two years until January, when Bethany Furtado was elected to the post, and Superintendent Horoschak announced that an examination of school funds as of June 30, 2010 showed a School Department surplus of roughly $6 million. At that time, they informed Avedisian that a portion of that money would be reserved to repay the city the balance of debt it had accumulated over two fiscal years.

 
Avedisian taps Carruolo as Chief of Staff, DePasquale to lead Planning Department

Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that he has appointed Mark Carruolo, the current acting co-chief of staff and the city’s longtime planning director, as his Chief of Staff. Avedisian has also appointed principal planner William DePasquale as the city’s new planning director. Both positions are effective immediately.

“I am so pleased that Mark and Bill have agreed to take on these new roles,” Avedisian said. “They are experienced, knowledgeable and tireless in their work on behalf of the citizens of Warwick. In the 20 years I have been in public service, I have come to respect Mark and Bill for their professionalism, integrity and genuine desire to do what they think is in the best long-term interest of our community. I know they are looking forward to the challenges that come with their new positions, and I have no doubt that they will continue to serve the people of Warwick well.”
 
City’s Inaugural celebration to be held January 4

The city will celebrate the inauguration of Mayor Scott Avedisian, the City Council and the School Committee on Tuesday, January 4 at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers of City Hall. As has been the case recently, the Inaugural ceremonies will again be more austere than in years past, due to budgetary concerns.

The Inaugural program features a prelude by the Pawtuxet Rangers, R.I.M. and the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife and Drum Corps and a procession of honor guards from the Rangers and the Warwick Fire and Police Departments. Diana Picozzi, a member of the Warwick Veterans Memorial High School Class of 2011, will lead the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance.

The oath of office will be administered to:

•    Joseph C. Coffey and Thomas C. Hannon, who are being promoted to the rank of captain;

•    Jamie M. Calise, Andrew P. Tainsh, and Rick J. Rathbun, as lieutenants:

•    Michael G. Lima; Detective Ryan T. Sornberger, and John V. Kelly, Jr. as sergeants;

•    Lucas Pedro, Jeremy Pineau, Patrick Smith, and Hovsep (Joseph) Sarkisian as probationary officers
