Mayor Scott Avedisian announced that crews began work this week to repair roads throughout the city that were damaged by the flood. Some work has been completed on a number of streets in the Cowesett area. Prep work has begun on Orient, Irene and Duchess streets – the hardest hit in that section of the city – and will be completed next week. In the case of those three, due to the extent of the damage, the Warwick Sewer Authority will pay for a complete overlay of the roads. Diamond Hill Road, one of the main thoroughfares in the area, will be repaired by the state Department of Transportation, because the cost for that project can be paid for through the Federal Highway Administration. Repairs reimbursed through that agency must be over $5,000; all other work is the responsibility of the city. Avedisian expressed his thanks to residents and businesses for their patience, noting that the city wanted to wait the recommended 90 days to assure no further road settling would occur and that city officials had been negotiating reimbursement rates with FEMA until recently as well. |
