Items, such as plastic lawn furniture, kiddie pools and laundry baskets, can be dropped off at recycling facility

Mayor Scott Avedisian announced today that the city, in cooperation with the state Resource Recovery Corporation, can now accept rigid plastic items for recycling. Items can be dropped off at the compost facility on Sandy Lane, where a specially marked Dumpster has been set up. Please note that these items cannot be placed in the blue recycling carts. Hours are 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Saturday until the end of December, after which the compost facility will only be open Monday through Friday (weather permitting), until the end of March.

The following types of plastics will be accepted: toys of all sizes (with metal, wood, wires and batteries removed); buckets (with metal handles removed); corrugated signs; milk/soda crates; laundry baskets; lawn furniture; landscape items, such as edging; microwave trays; totes of any size with metal removed; drums of any size, food grade only, no chemical containers; pet carriers with metal removed; pallets; coolers; shelving; closet organizers; dish drainers; flower pots (soil removed); traffic signs; garbage cans of any size (no metal); waste baskets; five-gallon water bottles.

The following cannot be recycled: PVC pipe/tubing; vinyl siding; grocery bags/stretch film; chemical, pesticide or herbicide containers; petroleum containers; styrofoam; water hoses; hazardous materials; and medical waste.

"We're pleased to offer residents this service, which will help to assure that thousands of pounds of plastic materials will be diverted from the landfill and recycled," Avedisian said.
