It's Your Right.  The Law Is There To Protect You.

Fair housing is a civil right protected by federal law. The City of Warwick's Community Development Office is here to answer your questions and take action, if necessary, to protect you and / or your family from housing discrimination.

But we need your help to do that.  You should call our office if you feel you have been discriminated based on the following reasons:

  • Race
  • Age
  • Color
  • Religion
  • Family Status
  • Gender
  • Mental or Physical Disability
  • National Origin
  • Sexual Orientation
  • or for any other reason, besides your ability to pay.

We Are Here To Help You.

You can make the difference.  Any information you provide will be held in the strictest confidence.

Housing discrimination comes in many forms.  If you have any questions about the law, call the Fair Housing Officer at (401) 738-2000 x6374.

STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

  • Rhode Island Housing - Rhode Island Housing works to ensure that all people who live and work in Rhode Island can afford a safe, healthy home that meets their needs. We provide low-interest loans, grants, education, advocacy and consumer counseling to help our customers buy and retain their homes. We also offer special programs to ensure that these homes are safe and healthy.
  • Fair Housing Rhode Island - Fair Housing Rhode Island is a statewide coordinated campaign administered by Rhode Island Housing. The Campaign’s goal is to raise awareness about state and federal fair housing rights and responsibilities and to provide a central fair housing resource center located here. Rhode Island Housing’s partners in this initiative includes Housing Network of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Housing Resources Commission. The Rhode Island Commission for Human Rights serves in a consultant capacity in support of the initiative.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT

  • HUD.GOV - The Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) administers and enforces federal laws and establishes policies that make sure all Americans have equal access to the housing of their choice.
  • Fair Housing Laws and Presidential Executive Orders
  • Fair Housing - It's Your Right - HUD has played a lead role in administering the Fair Housing Act since its adoption in 1968. The 1988 amendments, however, have greatly increased the Department's enforcement role. First, the newly protected classes have proven significant sources of new complaints. Second, HUD's expanded enforcement role took the Department beyond investigation and conciliation into the area of mandatory enforcement.
