How
does automated recycling
and trash collection work?
TRASH
COLLECTION
Using
the new automated system is easy! On your regular trash collection
day, you simply place your household trash into the supplied gray
95-gallon wheeled cart and place your container in the street
with the lid opening facing the street. Your containers must be
at least three feet from objects (including parked vehicles, fire
hydrants, etc.) on either side and at least two feet apart from
each other. Your cart must be placed at the curb by 7 am on your
collection day. Trash collection takes place once each week for
each city resident. All bagged garbage must be placed inside the
cart; if not, it will not be collected.
RECYCLING
COLLECTION
Each
single-family residence will receive two 65-gallon wheeled carts,
one blue and one green, to replace the existing 14-gallon bins
currently used for recycling collection. Instead of setting the
bins out each week, residents will set their recycling cart at
the curb every other week according to the color coded yearly
calendar. On alternating weeks the City will collect
mixed cans, bottles, plastics, and other containers in the blue
cart and the following week will pick up mixed paper, cardboard,
cereal boxes, pasta boxes, etc. in the green cart. CLICK
HERE for the complete collections calendar.
Carts should be wheeled to the curb and set with the lid opening
facing the street, and after collection must be stored out of
view. Carts will be emptied using equipment with an automated
lift arm that will dump materials into a special truck. The tall
carts have a 65-gallon capacity and take up about the same floor
space as the blue and green bin, but can hold much more material
due to its height. The
carts do not have to be put out for collection every week. Only
place the cart at the curb when it is full on the appropriate
collection week. Placing the container
out only when full will help to improve the efficiency of our
collections.
BULKY
ITEMS COLLECTIONS
(NON-RECYCLABLE ITEMS)
What is bulky waste? Bulky waste includes household items that
are normally collected but do not fit in the cart, such as couches,
chairs, mattresses, tables, carpets, painted/stained wood, etc.
The collection of these types of items is available to all residents
and is now by appointment only and limited to three items per
collection. The bulky items collection is for waste that is not
included in the weekly automated collection. Please keep large
items away from the trash and recycling carts as they will interfere
with the automated collection of the cart.
How
do I schedule a bulky item pick-up?
When you have bulky items for collection, call the Automation
Hotline at 732-9589 and they will add your stop to the pickup
route and let you know what day to set out your items. These items
should not be set out on the curb without first calling the Recycling
& Sanitation Division to arrange for an appointment for their
collection. Remember, before scheduling a collection, please check
with a
charitable organization to donate items that can be reused by
others.
BULKY
ITEMS DROP-OFF
(RECYCLABLE ITEMS ONLY)
Bulky items that are recyclable should be dropped off at the Municipal
Recycling Facility, which is located behind the Mickey Stevens
Sports Complex on Sandy Lane. Items that are accepted include
Metal items (grills, bicycles, lawnmowers, lawn chairs, car parts,
etc.), Unpainted/Unstained Wood (fence, miscellaneous scrap wood,
plywood, etc.) and Textiles (old clothes, towels, handbags, etc.).
The facility is open Monday through Saturday from 7:00 am to 3:00
pm.
