(December 2006)
Since its inception, our Transwick program has provided a valuable service to our residents by offering transportation to a variety of places, including the grocery store, library, senior center, retail shopping facilities and recreational trips. In recent years, thanks to the efforts of our Human Services staff, we have been able to expand our fleet and the array of services that Transwick provides.
I am pleased to announce that by the end of the month, we’ll be adding two new buses to our fleet, bringing the total compliment to eight vehicles. They’ll be used to replace older buses that will, in turn, will be used as more reliable spares.
The new vehicles are due in great part to the efforts of U.S. Senator Jack Reed, who secured federal transit funds for the Rhode Island Public Transportation Authority, which then awarded the City of Warwick a grant that pays for 80 percent of the cost of the buses. All told, the city’s financial investment is approximately $28,300, of a total cost of nearly $141,200.
I hope those of you who take advantage of the Transwick system will enjoy the new vehicles and that you will join me in thanking Senator Reed and our staff, who worked diligently to secure the RIPTA grant.
A formal dedication of the vehicles, which are being purchased from the Dattco Bus Company, will be held soon.
I would encourage those of you who have not used the Transwick service to keep it in mind should the need arise. Even if you don’t need to rely on it for transportation, the division arranges a number of enjoyable recreation trips throughout the year. These outings, coordinated by Kevin McMullen, have become some of our most popular activities.
On a different note, I wish each of you happy, peaceful, holidays, filled with the light and love of family and friends.
