City of Warwick Marriage License Guidelines

Hours: 8:30-12:00 & 1:00-3:30 - Monday thru Friday; except for holidays.

Both partners must apply for the license in person and sign the application in the presence of the city clerk or assistant.

Rhode Island residents: You must go to the city/town hall where the bride/groom/spouse resides. The marriage may take place in any city/town in Rhode Island.

Non-residents: If neither lives in the State of Rhode Island, you must go to the city/town where the marriage will take place. If the ceremony is performed in a city or town other than where it was issued, the validity of the marriage may be in question.

For Rhode Island civil unions merging w/ a marriage ceremony to take place, you must go to the city/town hall where the bride/groom/spouse resides. For a Rhode Island civil union merging w/out a marriage ceremony you must go back to the city/town hall where the civil union was filed and recorded.

IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED

Both partners are responsible for presenting:

  • Proof of birth facts and a valid form of identification.  Warwick requires a Certified Long Form Birth Certificate (laminated copies are not accepted) and your driver's license.  If your driver's license does not reflect your current mailing address, you must provide 2 pieces of mail that show your name and current mailing address.  If you do not have a driver’s license, we require another form of government-issued, photo ID along with 2 pieces of mail showing your name and current residence address. If you were born in another country you must show your original documents as well as a certified translation, completed by a certified translator. Documents must be certified. Notarized copies will not be accepted.

  • If previously married or in a previous civil union you are required to present a certified copy of the final judgement of divorce or dissolution of the civil union (with the raised or original stamped court seal), or a certified copy of the death certificate of the previous spouse/partner.
